QR Codes in the Wild - Flickr Group Pool showcases thousands of codes spotted on objects.

Business Cards – Placing a QR Code on a business card turns this small corporate identity piece into a bridge to a company website.  In addition, a QR Code on a business card could direct someone to a personal profile page providing both interactivity and personal connection.  QR Codes can imbed vCard (contact) information instead of a URL. However two factors limit the effectiveness, 1) Some smartphones are unable to do anything with the vCard information other than read it, and 2) the more information packed in to a QR Code the harder it is for a smartphone to accurately read the code.

Information Flyer – A simple real estate flyer sitting in an info tube can jump the holder of the printed sheet to additional detail and visuals including a virtual tour - depending on the web content available.

Marketing Materials – With a QR Code included on materials such as brochures & postcards – you can connect recipients to additional information, educational videos, sign-up forms, etc.
Ads - Magazine ads, community papers, coupon clipper would all benefit from moving engaged readers from the page to online content or commerce. See how Brooks Brothers is using QR Codes here.

Video to Go - Like a growing number of companies, Epic Motion launched a mobile version of their site.  Knowing prospective clientele access their site from smartphones they wisely put together the mobile version which has a little less text and graphics than the regular site. A QR Code on the site or a brochure would allow an excited soon-to-be bride to scan and view a sample trailer and share with a friend...on the go.

Scavenger Hunt – It doesn’t have to all be business.  Besides URLs and vCards, QR Codes can contain simple text.  Imagine putting together a QR Code Scavenger Hunt.  Each QR Code provides clues and information for the next QR Code Clue.

Interactive - As a marketer first and a printer second, I have watched the growth of the Internet and the explosion of all things electronic  - like social media, with amazement and fear; wondering how does printing fit into all this?  I look over at print in the marketing mix, complex or simple, and wonder what is your place?  Do you have a place anymore?  It’s no secret that people have changed how they gather information.  As a result, newspapers around the country are limping along if not outright closing because ad revenue has shifted substantially from traditional spaces to digital ones.

The Interactive Answer - Imagine being able to make your printed marketing materials interactive; to be able to direct your target audience, looking at your printed piece to a very specific page on your website.  With a smart phone and a free reader, it is now possible.  That is why those funny looking QR Codes have caught the attention of many marketers.

Measurable – QR Code usage can be measured.  Software is available to track QR Code usage.  If QR Codes are directed to unique URLs during a marketing campaign, Google Analytics can measure the incoming traffic with great precision.

History - QR Codes were created by Japanese automotive supplier Denso-Wave in 1994.  The QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the acronym of Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

A QR Code is a two-dimensional code, readable by QR scanners, mobile phones with camera, and smart phones. The code consisting of black modules arranged in a square pattern on white background. The information encoded can be text, URL, vCard, or other data.

More than you want to know – A QR Code is capable of 360 degree (omni-directional), high speed reading.  QR Code accomplishes this task through position detection patterns located at the three corners of the symbol. These position detection patterns guarantee stable high-speed reading, circumventing the negative effects of background interference.
